Of course, don’t use this fact as a way to choose between the two. Both are equal in their playback ability, sound and storage is mostly dependant on your files and the type of device you use.
When it comes down to it, you should purchase the mp3 or mp4 player that catches your eye. Maybe its price, or design, or brand. Whatever your reason, choose what will work for you and your lifestyle. The way an mp3 player works and lasts is more important than whether it plays mp4 or mp3.
